2025 plork prize

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts (CWPA) from the University of Baltimore awards the Plork Prize each year to one MFA in CWPA student who exhibits the most "plork" (play + work) during their thesis year. All graduating CWPA students are eligible for this annual award.

The MFA in CWPA faculty is pleased to announce the Plork Prize winner for 2025, Diana Elizabeth Clarke.

The entire MFA thesis cohort displayed key elements of what we in the MFA call “plorking”—playing, working, creating with abandon, helping others with joy. The plork ethic is the heart of our program. Faculty were especially impressed by this class’s professional-level teamwork to bring about the annual MFA Reading and Book Fair.

Diana Elizabeth Clarke, a fiction writer, worked closely with Professors Jane Delury, Betsy Boyd, and Tony Frye during her thesis year. As her bio details, “[She] is a creative writer, artist, book designer, and the founder of Elizabeth Publications. Her goal is to bring the world unique and impactful stories for readers to enjoy.”

"Under Water, Diana’s thesis collection, which employs elements of fantasy to dramatize real-life struggles most central to women, is a true page-turner," says Professor Boyd. "And I was especially excited by her use of illustration, both digital and classically painted."

“Diana’s stories beautifully combine emotional grounding with delightful whimsy, never shying away from the hard truths of being human but always letting in the light,” adds Professor Delury.

During Diana’s reading at the book fair, she acted out the parts of both a crafty witch and a thoughtful young woman with daring and panache, the audience cheering. With characteristic generosity and enthusiasm, Diana also contributed her graphic design skills to book fair PR materials.

“Inspiring others by embracing her love of learning, sharing ideas, and creatively exploring in a uniquely fun way, Diana was the definition of Plorky,” notes Professor Frye. “To witness the joy in her process inspired one to view work through the eyes of a child again, discovering through play.”

The newly minted alum will receive a $500 stipend. The University of Baltimore community wishes Diana congratulations and happy plorking to come!
